Recovery: Coffee, Family, ​and Stumbling

Steaming hot coffee greeted my mouth as I gazed across the frigid white country. The snow outside my window webbed the trees some of it standing four or five inches tall on the very limbs themselves! what a lark it would be to tromp around in the snow, but Ha! little luck there as I heft around this lugubrious boot. Though it is quite a pain to wear this boot I am surely glad that I’m not still wearing one of those stiff and dare I say smelly casts.

Just so you’re aware, my dear readers, I did not use a picture of my foot as I’m sure you’ve guessed. I’m sadly not that tan.

During this forced time of recovery, I’ve been struggling through writing a couple articles. Admittedly now, after submitting two from my editor’s topics, I find myself rather up a tree, as I search for another topic, which is quite difficult since I haven’t been out on a regular basis. Writing for the newspaper, however, is a blessing and a distraction. Like Crosby sang: Count your blessings instead of sheep.

So, since my surgery, it has been roughly six weeks. And after these painful and somewhat excruciating weeks, I’ve pondered quite a lot about life. My foot, after the checkup, was proven “quite healthy” by the doctor. I have quite a different opinion as its attached to my leg. Hehe, it is feeling quite a lot better despite its grotesque appearance.

Another thing I’ve had to combat as I recover is not working out! Its been a trifle disheartening. Though I have been able to keep up with my ab exercises and arm workouts. Which indeed has kept me sane. Let me say, I am a huge fan of XHIT!

I’ve also been doing heel-to-knee and leg lifts a lot. The heel-to-knee bicycling sadly must take the place of my bicycle for now (sad face). I can’t wait to bicycle again! I’ve always hoped that one summer I could do this notorious biking “trek” across Lawrence Ks. called “Lizard in the Skillet.” Quite a comical race to be sure, it’s in the hottest part of summer and after the race, they provide free salsa and heated blankets!

Not to say that I’m killing it with workouts now, to my dismay I’m not. I guess I’ve been concentrating a lot more on my diet. I’ve been really enjoying kale/spinach smoothies from my Nutribullet. I really do prefer kale to spinach. Hehe, there’s the vegetable farmer’s daughter comin’ out in me!

Here’s one of my favorite smoothie recipes:

1 c. blueberries

1/4 c. peaches (I used frozen)

1 banana

bunch of cilantro

1 cup kale/spinach

3 ice cubes

1/2 c. milk (I prefer using almond milk but cow milk works well too! 🙂

Fill Nutri-bullet to proper line, not too full- bad things happen if it’s too full, trust me! Then blend, for three 50 second intervals. And voila!

I’ve also been keeping my hands busy with knitting. I’m knitting a blanket! That is just on the cusp of being finished. Super think and amazing! Let me tell you, its taken quite a couple fort-nights to knit, but I must say that it has paid off nicely. Quite warm!

Sincerely, Brownie

As I stepped inside, a warm chocolatey goodness overcame me. It was raining outside and very cloudy. The day held something melancholy in it. I had been active most of the day riding my bike and writing on my blog. So, I think a brownie is in accord with my efforts, though somewhat counter-productive. I try and weigh the chocolate equally with bananas and healthier brownie ingredients.

After my brownie goodness, I walked into the cool winds of Kansas, blowing against my face like a Mexican desert wind.

As I walked down the long row of benches lining the sidewalk I saw the City Hall sign. It hung there in a melancholy state as if it hadn’t been ready for another Monday either. I was on a quest to return my inter-library loan books to our small library. Being Monday the library and coincidentally the city hall building was locked, no surprise there. Thankfully, there is a drop box for books. As I gingerly shoved the books through the slot I felt the heat from the metal flit across my fingers angrily.

After making several laps around town to burn calories I returned to my house for a protein-rich lunch of egg and toast. My water intake I have been increasing which has lead me to be more energetic. Also, I think my XHIT workouts and walking has been helping considerably.

Though I have been cutting calories and watching what I eat.

When it all boils down, I’m human, imperfect and have a flawed will.

            -And I crave brownies.

 

Brownies have been a part of my baking repertoire for quite some time. I find that they are easy to make and will satisfy just about any crowd. I myself am a huge fan of their chocolatey goodness. As previously noted I have been a huge fan of muggable desserts which does not involve mugging, no pun intended.

I have found an abundance of recipes almost a recipe for any mood or event you’re having. It’s a sure-fire way to satisfy your inner cravings with just a little portion.
